Chile propose opening of the Pacific Alliance to other countries in the region

Santiago 28 Mai (EFE) -. Chile will propose the opening of the Pacific Alliance, also integrated by Colombia, Mexico and Peru, to other countries in the region, including the Atlantic slope as Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, Official sources indicated.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Heraldo Muñoz, will travel to Mexico City to attend the 11th Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Pacific Alliance, which will be held next Friday.

Before leaving towards the Mexican capital, the Chilean foreign minister expressed today that the foreign policy of the government of President Michelle Bachelet "has some fundamental principles of continuity, but also has elements of change."

"Perhaps the main element of change is the intensification of ties with Latin America and the Caribbean, particularly in South America," he said.

Muñoz made this reflection during a master class before ambassadors and diplomatic corps for the inauguration of the academic year of Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy, which is run by Juan Somavia, former director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

"We want to return to being protagonists of regional policy, not only for the sake of tradition, common history, but because we can talk to the world of Latin America," said the foreign minister.

According to Heraldo Muñoz, the differences are not a barrier to finding a common look among the countries of Latin America.

The minister also talked about strengthening the participation in forums in which Chile is present, as the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
